WAFCON Delay Disrupts Banyana Banyana’s Title Defense Plans

South Africa’s Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has spoken out about the postponement of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to July 2025.

While initially expressing disappointment at the delay, Coach Ellis identified both challenges and opportunities presented by the additional year.

The postponement coincides with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where Zambia and Nigeria will represent Africa in the women’s football tournament.

This shift in the calendar allows Banyana Banyana more time for focused training and player development.

Coach Ellis, known for prioritizing talent over age, can utilize this extended period to integrate promising new players into the squad.

“It gives us a lot of time to prepare and get players ready,” Coach Ellis stated. “We will ensure we are well-equipped to defend our title.”
