Mwendwa to Contest for Re-election in FKF National Elections

Nick Mwendwa, the incumbent President of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), has set his sights on securing another term in the FKF elections slated for December 7.

For weeks, there has been speculation about whether the 45-year-old Kariobangi Sharks owner would run again, especially after serving two terms in office.

However, Africa Top Sports has now confirmed that Mwendwa will indeed be a candidate, seeking to extend his leadership at the helm of Kenyan football.

A trusted source within FKF, who wished to remain anonymous, disclosed, “Nick (Mwendwa) will run again. Many people forget he has officially only served one term because when he first took office, the new constitution wasn’t operational.

So, we’re backing him, and it’s practically a done deal.”Mwendwa’s confidence in his re-election is not without precedent.

In 2016, he was elected with a strong majority, earning 50 out of 77 votes in a decisive win against the then-incumbent Sam Nyamweya.

He successfully retained his position in the October 2020 elections, this time securing 77 of the 85 votes cast, further solidifying his leadership in the football community.

During his time in office, Mwendwa has been lauded for his efforts to grow the game domestically but has also faced criticism. His ties to Kariobangi Sharks have been viewed by some as a conflict of interest, a point of contention throughout his tenure.

In 2018 and again in 2022, Mwendwa expressed interest in running for a FIFA Council seat, only to withdraw from both races, citing political maneuvering behind the scenes. Despite these setbacks, his resolve to remain at the top of Kenyan football is clear.

Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula recently announced his candidacy, bringing the number of presidential hopefuls to eight. The list includes familiar names such as Sam Nyamweya, Hussein Mohammed, and Sammy Ocholla, alongside former FKF executives Omondi Aduda and Jack Oguda. Despite the crowded field, Mwendwa remains the man to beat.
