Uganda’s Men’s Squad Gets a Boost for 7s Challenger in Munich

The Uganda Men’s 7s rugby team has been making the news lately, with their performances nothing short of exceptional.

The Head coach, Tolbert Onyango, released seven senior players from the training squad last week.

Unsurprisingly, five of these players were seen playing for their respective clubs during the second round of the Nile Special Rugby Championship playoffs over the weekend.

The release of these players led many to speculate whether Onyango was looking to shake things up ahead of the World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger 2024 tournament set to take place in Munich, Germany on May 18-19.

On Thursday morning, however, the speculation was officially put aside as the coach announced his 12-man traveling squad at the pitch session held at Kyadondo.

The upcoming tournament in Munich will see a new-look squad, featuring five fresh faces, comprising Mubarak Wandera, Karim Arinaitwe, Mark Osuna, Allan Olango, and Aaron Tukei, all making their debut appearance in the 2024 series.

Experienced players like Denis Etwau, Alex Aturinda, and Norbert Okeny are also part of the squad, bringing valuable experience to the team, having been a part of all past rounds this year.

William Nkore is set to captain the team in Munich, with Aturinda and Okeny as his deputies.

The team is confident and well-prepared for the challenge ahead, with their coach expressing his excitement and belief that the tournament will provide many great stories to tell.

Uganda is currently positioned ninth in the overall series standings and finds itself in Pool B alongside Hong Kong China, Tonga, and Mexico.

The team is ready for the competition, and its members are determined to give their best, showcasing their skills and making Uganda proud.
