Fufa Holds off Venue Confirmation for June World Cup Qualifiers due to Incompletion of ‘Namboole Stadium’

The countdown for the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June has begun, but the uncertainty surrounding the readiness of Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, looms large.

Fufa President Moses Magogo, however, remains steadfast in his belief that there is still hope for a successful hosting of the matches.

Recent reports indicate that the stadium is not yet fully equipped to accommodate international matches due to ongoing construction work.

Magogo acknowledged that the progress at Namboole has experienced some setbacks, with certain components required to meet FIFA standards still missing.

Financial challenges have played a significant role in the delay, with only UGX 80 billion out of the UGX 97 billion received so far.

Despite these setbacks, Magogo assured the public that efforts are underway to ensure the procurement of the missing components.

However, there are still crucial matters that need to be resolved and confirmed within the 60-day window before the matches are scheduled to take place.

Fufa is expected to make an official statement soon regarding the venue for the matches.

While Namboole remains a viable option, discussions are ongoing to explore alternative options.

Magogo highlighted that despite the challenges, there are ongoing high-level discussions taking place between CAF, the government, and Fufa.

The federation is yet to provide an official communication and is carefully assessing the situation before making any decisions.

In the past years, Uganda has faced difficulties in hosting matches at CAF/FIFA standard within the country.

Instead, matches were held in Egypt, Morocco, and Cameroon during the 2023 Afcon qualifiers, underscoring the need for suitable stadiums domestically.

Shadow Sports Minister Geoffrey Kayemba Solo holds a differing opinion, expressing doubt that Namboole will be ready in time for the June matches.

With conflicting views, the uncertainty surrounding the situation persists.

In the midst of uncertainty, stakeholders remain optimistic that a resolution will be reached.

Ongoing discussions between the relevant parties signify a commitment to finding a solution.

Fufa is determined to address the challenges and ensure the successful hosting of the World Cup qualifiers.
